Let’s Talk Music

I have always been a very musical person. I remember my teachers in public school (yes, I’ve been in public school; I started homeschooling in third grade) got very irritated because I was constantly humming in class. And it wasn’t to get on my teachers’ nerves. (Don’t assume the worst of me.) I hummed everywhere. (I also danced everywhere, but that’s a story for another time.) I couldn’t help it, either. In my house, there was always some music playing: Marvin Sapp, Kirk Franklin, Kari Jobe. All day, every day.

To this day, I learn songs very fast and sing quite a bit, but less than I did when I was younger.

The reason why I bring this up is because I know that at preteen age, you start to get into your own music. I definitely did. I got into Lindsey Stirling and a lot of other artists that I have decided to leave alone now that I’m older. Now, I’m not saying that getting into different artists is bad. I’m just saying that you should be selective with what you listen to, because, once the words are in your mind, they don’t go away. Unfortunately, as of late, I’ve been having what I’ll call “musical flashbacks” to a bunch of songs that I shouldn’t have listened to so much. Therefore, I’m speaking from experience.

Today, I’m not ashamed to admit that I listen to a lot of Kirk Franklin, Tauren Wells, Jekalyn Carr, and other Christian contemporary artists. Are you ashamed to admit what you listen to? If you are, that’s okay. I encourage you to take a step back and be honest with yourself about what words you’re hearing and what they mean. Be gentle with yourself, but also make some space for some new music. Make your decisions on your music based on God’s word, namely Philippians 4:8. It’s not easy, but you’ll never regret it. To start you off on a new musical journey, or to continue you current musical journey, here is my personal playlist of favorite songs:

There is so much music to enjoy beyond Beyoncé and what the world likes, guys. Your music defines you and your thoughts, as do your other media choices. Take a deep breath and read that last sentence again. See how it’s already beginning to change your thoughts? That is the power of media, the power of words. You can either see that power break someone or shape them. I want my words to shape. What do you want your words to do?

Thanks, guys, for reading this post. That was kind of you, and I appreciate it. If you like my content, then check out the rest of my posts. May I suggest my Why I Read post? Unless, of course, you have already read it. If you like or liked that post, then you should subscribe, because once a week, I release a post about navigating this world of media.

‘K, bye!
