Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Review

Me and my siblings spent a lot of time prior to the Sonic movie debating who is the best character. My younger sister, a Sonic fan, insisted to my younger brother, a Knuckles fan, that Sonic rules and Knuckles drools. Of course, he flipped it around on her, and they spent at least an hour total doing that in the days before its release. (Me, I’m a total Tails fan. *sigh*)

We went to see the movie at 2:50 on the date of its release because my younger sister had been waiting since late December for the movie to come out. However, on the way home from seeing the film, she sat in the van in sad silence. Until Mom asked, “Why have you been so quiet? You were the most excited about it, yet I haven’t even heard what you thought.” And my sister burst into tears, saying that it had been a disappointment after waiting four months. I thought it was, too. Let me explain why.

The basic premise of the movie is this: Dr. Robotnik, who at the end of the first movie was stranded on a mushroom planet, discovers Knuckles the echidna. They team up and pursue the Master Emerald (as you’d guess, the most powerful thing in the universe). Tails the fox finds Sonic to warn him, and they end up teaming up to stop Robotnik and Knuckles.

My first complaint about this movie is that Dr. Robotnik was a drag. I’ve seen enough movies featuring Jim Carrey to know that he can be funny, but in this movie, he wasn’t. The problem was that the producers were too focused on making Agent Stone a recurring character. Let me just say that, Agent Stone’s conduct, in Go-Go Tomago’s words, “we did not sign up for.”

Secondly, Tails didn’t get that much screen time. He got knocked out in pretty much the first action scene, and honestly, was a bit of a boring addition to the movie, as cute as he was.

But the positives of the movie were strong. Tom and Maddy are great parents to Sonic, and we get to see Tails, Sonic, and Knuckles as brothers. What I didn’t like, however, was that Sonic constantly lied to his father figure, Tom, and continued to disobey him constantly.

All in all, I think this movie is not worth the hype, and it missed the mark for me and my family.

However, following the movie, me and my siblings had a Sonic-themed Siblings Hangout Night (we’ve been doing Sibs nights since mid-2020; we’re great friends despite our age differences): ate pizza, played Sonic Mania, and watched the original Sonic the Hedgehog movie. (The one where Jim Carrey was actually funny, and where Sonic said actually clever things.) I’m not even saying Sonic the Hedgehog is the best movie ever, but it’s better than the sequel, and it’s awesome when you have sibs to quote lines from it with.

So, that closes out my review on Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Thanks so much for spending your valuable time reading my opinion on this movie. I hope I helped you to decide whether or not to watch it.

‘K, bye!
