My younger brother is nine years old and I am confident in saying that he is one of the smartest people I know. Today I want to share a list of read-alouds I’ve shared with him over the past few years.

The first book, which he said was his favorite out of the ones I’ve read to him, is called Henry’s Freedom Box and is the story of Henry Brown’s escape from slavery. This book has beautiful illustrations and is a wonderful introduction to the amazing story of the man who mailed himself to freedom.
The second book is one of my favorites. I remember that when me and my family were stationed in Germany, this was my go-to book.

I honestly think that this book began my interest in mute and selectively mute characters. The story is about a young Trumpeter swan named Lewis, who is born without a voice. This causes him much trouble, especially when he meets the girl of his dreams and cannot even get her attention. When Lewis’ father sees that he is suffering from unrequited love, he steals a trumpet for Lewis from a shop. Lewis, determined to pay for the stolen instrument, sets out on his own to earn the money and winds up becoming famous.
This book kept my brother smiling and laughing all the way through; I was so happy that he loved it in his own way.
The third book I shared with my brother was a book called Paper Wishes.

Guys, this book. This book.
Paper Wishes is about a young girl named Manami whose life is suddenly uprooted when her family is sent to Japanese-American incarceration camps. Manami tries to sneak her dog, Yujiin, along with her on the train to the prison camp, but Yujiin is discovered and taken from her. Manami, traumatized and lonely, loses her ability to speak and turns to picture drawing to ease the pain of losing Yujiin, all while hoping that he will appear at the gates of the camp. Will he?
My little brother loved this book and found it sad that Manami lost her dog. I also loved this book because selective mutism and dogs. I love dogs. =}
That concludes my list of books I read with my bro. I’m sure I’ve read many more to him, but these were the most recent and most memorable to us.
Thanks so much for reading today’s post. Don’t forget to subscribe and send the link to someone who would love these books.
‘K, bye!
